Wesleyan Foundation supporting the women of tomorrow

InUnity deliver several projects that focus on developing self-confidence, self-esteem, and resilience in girls. As Europe’s youngest city and with some of the most disadvantaged communities in the UK, this means a lot of demand for women needing our support.

What we do at InUnity is to provide opportunities for the girls to grow - to use these newfound skills and qualities to support others. We are all aware more than ever, that the act of kindness and helping others can really boost your own self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth.

This year we have supported over 140 girls to do just that through youth social action. Over the last year there have been some extraordinary examples of ‘helping others to help yourself’. Although 2020 has halted much of our face-to-face delivery, it has provided some innovative ways for some of our girls to help others.

Some recent stats from two of our social action groups - EmpowHER and She Will - demonstrate that young women participating in these programmes have improved in multiple areas, but especially in confidence, self-esteem, resilience, and wellbeing.

“We find ways to help others as well as help ourselves at the same time and feel good about ourselves”.

Involving young women in social action is also improving perceptions and narrative about young people in the community, from writing letters to isolated elderly residents in social housing, to making candles for Christmas presents to be distributed by the British Red Cross; making up ‘happy bags’ for young people struggling with their mental health to incorporating litter picks into their daily exercise – it’s been overwhelming to see how these young women have supported others in their local community.

Many more ideas are being explored right now. Essentially, funding from Wesleyan has benefitted a far wider audience than just these girls & young women; it is literally the gift that keeps on giving, far reaching across communities. So, from us to you – thank you.
